NASA is making strides in maintaining U.S. leadership in space by inviting proposals for the next generation of commercial space stations. The agency has issued its final Request for Proposals, encouraging companies to design, build, and operate these stations in low Earth orbit. NASA Administrator Jared Isaacman emphasized the importance of a sustained American presence after the International Space Station’s retirement, highlighting the need for research, crew training, and preparation for future missions to the Moon and Mars.
Following recent engagement events with private industry, including Requests for Information in March and a draft proposal in July, NASA has focused on collaborating with industry to ensure a smooth transition towards commercial stations. Proposals are due by December 8, 2027, with contract awards expected in spring 2027. NASA plans to select multiple contractors for developmental phases and final design assessment.
