Bloom Energy Reports Record Revenue Growth
Bloom Energy (BE) has achieved a significant milestone by surpassing $1 billion in quarterly revenue for the first time, reporting $1.07 billion in Q2 2026—an increase of 166% from the previous year. The company also turned a profit of $196 million, a remarkable turnaround from a loss of approximately $43 million a year prior.
Growth Projections
Management remains optimistic, revising its 2026 revenue guidance upwards to a range of $3.9 billion to $4.2 billion, effectively doubling its 2025 revenue of $2.02 billion.
Examining Profit Margins
Despite the impressive headline numbers, analysts question whether Bloom can maintain profitability as it scales. The gross margin rose to 33.4%, up from 26.7%, primarily due to a substantial $37.4 million recovery from tariffs deemed illegal by the Supreme Court. However, without this refund, the gross margin would drop to approximately 30%, consistent over three quarters.
Profitability Without the Refund
Even excluding the refund, Bloom showcased strong fundamentals. The operating income fell from $182 million to $145 million, yet it remains a stark contrast to last year’s operating loss of $3.5 million. The net income for common shareholders would be about $159 million, showcasing operational efficiencies.
Tariff Challenges
While Bloom has navigated some tariff challenges, new tariffs have been introduced that could impact margins negatively. Future margins will need to accommodate expected costs from tariffs on steel, aluminum, and copper. Management has maintained a non-GAAP gross margin target of 34% for 2026, though current trends suggest a necessity for improvement in the latter half of the year.
Financial Outlook
Bloom has reported three consecutive profitable quarters, setting the stage for a potentially strong Q3 2026. As the stock currently trades around $276, representing a 56 times earnings multiple for 2027 expectations, analysts suggest caution until the company’s gross margins show consistent improvement.
Conclusion
While Bloom Energy is experiencing impressive growth, the sustainability of its profit margins remains in question amidst economic changes and increased competition. Until a more stable underlying gross margin is established, potential investors may want to hold off on purchasing shares.
