Science Minister Emphasizes Transformation as Our Main Focus

Blade Nzimande Highlights Focus on Inclusivity in South African Science

South Africa’s Minister of Science, Blade Nzimande, has underscored the critical importance of transforming the nation’s public science system to reflect its diverse population. During a parliamentary session on October 6, he stressed that true transformation goes beyond mere numerical representation; it requires a fundamental shift in institutional culture, elimination of systemic barriers, and alignment of scientific endeavors with the realities and priorities of the people.

Nzimande’s remarks were supported by a report from the auditor-general indicating that while demographic representation among postgraduate funding recipients is improving, significant discrepancies linked to apartheid-era structures persist at advanced career stages.

In an extensive eight-hour meeting, he called for broader engagement in scientific fields from women, youth, individuals with disabilities, and historically marginalized communities. He emphasized the necessity for transformative practices to be embedded in leadership roles, research agendas, and funding mechanisms.

Reflecting on his previous concerns expressed in August 2025, Nzimande reiterated his alarm at the ongoing structural inequities within the science sector, noting that only two of the 32 top-rated researchers last year were Black and just three were women.

Data from the Department of Science, Technology, and Innovation for the 2025-26 performance period reveal positive trends, with 92% of PhD bursaries awarded to Black applicants and 63% to women.

In response to historical imbalances, Nzimande has initiated measures to enhance research funding, including the introduction of 41 new research chairs in previously underfunded universities and a tailored funding scheme for historically disadvantaged institutions to bolster their research capacities.

By promoting inclusivity and strengthening governance, Nzimande aims to create a more coherent and effective national innovation system that improves lives, enhances opportunities, and ensures South Africa’s sustainable development.
