Axiom paves the way for a new era of commercial space stations.

Axiom Space plans to launch its first two modules of a commercial space station in orbit by 2029, as it develops new lunar spacesuits and enhances digital infrastructure for space missions. CEO Dr. Jonathan Cirtain discussed expanding their strategy at the 77th International Astronautical Congress, emphasizing that to be a human space exploration company, Axiom needs astronauts, spacesuits, and a space station.

The first module is currently in final assembly in Italy and will be integrated in Houston, with a target launch date in 2028. The second module’s assembly follows closely behind. Once in orbit, the modules will form an operational space station supporting a crew of four.

Axiom is also introducing advanced distributed computing technology to process data closer to where it’s generated, alleviating bandwidth issues faced in space. This initiative aims to enhance communications while minimizing the need for power-intensive computing on the station. An on-orbit demonstration of this system is a future milestone.

In addition, Axiom’s next-generation spacesuit, AxEMU, is set for qualification and testing for NASA’s Artemis lunar exploration missions. The company sees increased demand for longer-duration missions, encouraging countries to develop their astronaut programs and scientific projects.

Overall, Axiom envisions a comprehensive infrastructure that combines human spaceflight, advanced technology, and international collaboration to shape the future of space exploration.
