Celebration of Latin Culture in Rhode Island: Sabor Latino Event
PROVIDENCE, R.I. (WPRI) — “Unidos somos más: together we are more.” This sentiment resonates throughout Rhode Island, especially during the 38th annual Sabor Latino event, a vibrant celebration of Latin culture hosted by Rhode Island Latino Arts. Marta Martínez, the executive director of the organization, highlighted the inclusion of diverse Latin American nations, stating, “Every single country — 21 Latin American countries — are incorporated, and you’ll find a restaurant of almost any of them.”
Sabor Latino stands out as a major fundraiser that celebrates Latin culture through music, art, dance, and cuisine. Attendees can expect delicious offerings from local restaurants, including tacos and traditional Mexican food from Casa Azul. Martínez also invites visitors to engage in a game of lotería, a traditional Mexican game.
This year’s theme is Café Recuerdos, or “memory café,” aiming to evoke the warmth and connection of sharing coffee among friends and family. Artists have been commissioned to transform aluminum coffee pots, known in Latin America as “grecas,” into works of art that celebrate these shared moments.
Providence artist Helen De La Cruz, originally from the Dominican Republic, created her own greca inspired by the traditional sock-like filter used in her homeland. “I wanted to show that through the greca,” she shares, noting the deeper cultural significance beyond the modern use of the coffee pot.
Due to unforeseen circumstances, the Sabor Latino event has been rescheduled from its original date of October 11. For updates, visitors can check the Rhode Island Latino Arts website.
This event not only offers delicious food and entertainment but also fosters a sense of community, unity, and appreciation for the rich diversity of Latin American cultures.
