John D. Clair’s Electrify Launches on Kickstarter
John D. Clair is making waves in the board game industry with his latest creation, Electrify, currently featured on Kickstarter. Known for popular titles like Space Base and Mystic Vale, Clair has garnered nearly 1,500 backers for this new project.
Collaborating with New Designer Ian Hutchinson
Ian Hutchinson, a new designer with Alderac Entertainment Group (AEG), joined Clair in developing Electrify. In a conversation on Table Talk, Hutchinson discussed his experience collaborating with Clair and shared insights about the game’s mechanics. The game features a river-style mechanic popularized by Ark Nova, combining strategic timing and engine-building elements.
Game Mechanics and Accessibility
Hutchinson emphasizes that Electrify is a complex puzzle where players must master timing to maximize combos. Once players learn the symbols, the game becomes accessible, even for younger audiences.
Development Journey and Recent Playtest at GenCon
Throughout his interview, Hutchinson recounted stories from the game’s development, including its reception at GenCon this summer. He described the exciting process and challenges of being a first-time designer alongside established names.
Catch Hutchinson’s full interview on Table Talk, airing every other Saturday on WJON. The next show on October 17 will feature Emily Vincent discussing her current Kickstarter project, Perennial, alongside game expert William Pankratz.
