Lansing’s top boxing athletes work diligently to master the art of boxing.

Rising Star: Zach Valdez in the Boxing Ring

In Lansing, Michigan, 13-year-old Zach Valdez is quickly making a name for himself in the boxing world. Having started boxing less than two years ago, he’s already had the chance to compete in prestigious venues, such as the Milwaukee Athletic Club, and is preparing for his fourth bout.

“I really enjoy fighting, especially when I win,” Valdez shares, noting that his journey began when his dad spotted a Facebook post about Crown Boxing Club, a non-profit organization dedicated to nurturing competitive fighters. Thriving within this supportive community, Valdez has found his passion for the sport.

Training at Crown Boxing Club

Valdez credits his growth to Crown, where he has developed a strong stance and a calm demeanor under pressure—essential traits for any successful boxer. Ali Easley, the head trainer at Crown and a faculty member at Michigan State University, emphasizes the club’s mission to foster positive influences in the lives of young athletes. He integrates MSU students into training sessions to help inspire the younger fighters.

“When MSU students train alongside them, it provides a role model effect that many of these kids might not have at home,” Easley explains. This blended approach not only enhances skills but also builds a family-like atmosphere that fosters camaraderie, especially during team travels to competitions.

Pathway to Competitive Boxing

Crown Boxing Club offers a trial period for youth, which Valdez took advantage of when starting his boxing journey. Those who show potential and commitment may receive invitations to join the competitive team.

Easley highlights the importance of this open door for aspiring fighters: “Three to four times a year, we offer a free month so kids can see if they enjoy boxing.”

Student Fighter: Finn Hillier

Alongside Valdez is Finn Hillier, a junior at Michigan State studying zoology and marine biology, who found his way to Crown through MSU’s boxing classes. Hillier, who has been part of the program ever since, hopes to compete in the upcoming bouts in Milwaukee, aiming to perform for his home crowd.

“Fighting in front of friends and family would be amazing,” Hillier expresses, showcasing the profound connection between the fighters and their community.

Conclusion

As both Valdez and Hillier pursue their boxing ambitions, they serve not only as students and competitors but as role models for other youths in the area. With the support of Crown Boxing Club, they are learning life lessons and building lasting friendships through the sport they love.

With the upcoming competition on October 16 in Milwaukee, both young boxers are excited to demonstrate their hard work and dedication in the ring.
