Trust dedicates £2.5 million to enhance Altnagelvin Emergency Department facilities.

The Western Trust has announced a £2.5 million investment to upgrade the Emergency Department (ED) at Altnagelvin Hospital in Londonderry. This funding aims to better meet the rising demand for services and has already led to improvements in patient flow and facilities for patients, families, and staff.

Recent enhancements include a new kitchen for patients, expanded vending services, and a dedicated treatment space for patients needing isolation or care for infectious diseases. Ongoing work consists of extensions to assessment and treatment areas, as well as upgrades to waiting areas and staff facilities.

Geraldine McKay, director of acute services at the Western Trust, acknowledged the challenges faced by the ED and emphasized that while the investment won’t solve every issue, it’s making a significant impact on thousands of users each year. Furthermore, the trust stresses that addressing pressures within the ED requires more than just physical expansions; factors like rising demand, complex patient needs, and hospital capacity also play crucial roles in patient flow. Planning is underway for further expansions, particularly in the resuscitation area.
