Iran Intensifies Crackdown on Cafes and Theaters in Ongoing Hijab Enforcement

The Islamic Republic of Iran has intensified its crackdown on cafes and theaters, threatening closures or license revocations if they do not enforce the compulsory hijab for women. Recent reports from legal groups indicate that establishments in Tehran’s Sanei and Iranshahr streets are particularly targeted, with police describing these areas as hotspots for “pedestrian cruising” and vulgar music.

The advocacy network Dadbaan has criticized this approach, asserting that activities such as social gatherings, live music, or playing backgammon are not criminal and do not justify shutting down businesses. They argue such measures violate citizens’ rights and the legality of crimes.

Amid these restrictions, several businesses have reportedly been sealed, including a theater company forced to clarify the marital status of two actors to permit physical contact on stage. The Iranian judiciary intervened after a minor stage embrace drew criticism, highlighting the regime’s stringent enforcement of social norms in the arts.
