USU Gears Up for Renovation of Animal Science Facility

Major Renovation of Animal Science Building at Utah State University

LOGAN — Starting next week, visitors to Utah State University (USU) will notice temporary fencing around the Quad as construction begins on the renovation of the Animal Science building, slated to last until November 2028.

Project Details

The project, designed by Method Studio, will modernize the historic building, focusing on updates such as HVAC systems, elevators, and restrooms while ensuring historic preservation and enhancing seismic safety. The renovations aim to better serve the entire USU community.

Originally built between 1917-18, the Animal Science building has a rich history, serving various purposes over its nearly 110 years, including as a barracks and a convalescent hospital during the Spanish Flu pandemic. Since 2012, it has housed the Mathematics and Statistics Department.

Benefits of the Renovation

Professor John Stevens highlights that the renovation will provide:

  • Expanded facilities for the Aggie Math Learning Center (AMLC), which offers crucial tutoring services.
  • A research lab for the Data Science and AI Center, fostering collaborative work between faculty and students.
  • Upgraded research collaboration spaces.

Construction Impact

The initial phase will involve relocating underground utilities, with fencing set to be placed on the west and north sides of the building, restricting pedestrian access between the Animal Science and Geology buildings to the Quad. Pedestrians can still access the west side of the building using existing pathways.

While utility work should finish by year-end, additional fencing will be installed in January, extending onto the Quad’s north side.

Tom Graham, project architect/manager, acknowledges the disturbance caused by the project but stresses its importance for safety.

Temporary Arrangements

Due to construction, the Math & Stats Department main office has moved to the third floor of Old Main, and students can find help at the AMLC’s temporary location on the fourth floor of Merrill-Cazier Library. More details about department programs during construction are available on the Math & Stats moving page.
