The Area Hosts a Quiet Exhibition – The Villanovan

The Space, an advocacy club at Villanova University focused on reproductive health, recently conducted a silent demonstration to raise awareness about maternal mortality in the United States, which has reached alarming levels. The event featured 65 small white paper hearts, symbolizing the 649 women who died due to preventable causes during pregnancy in 2024.

Senior Sophia Lemmons highlighted the U.S. maternal mortality rate as significantly higher than other high-income countries, with a majority of these deaths being preventable. Alongside the demonstration, The Space launched a social media campaign aimed at educating the community about this pressing issue and its ties to reproductive justice.

The club addressed various factors contributing to maternal mortality, including racial disparities, geographic access to healthcare, and systemic obstacles faced by Black women, who experience a maternal mortality rate three times higher than that of white women. The initiative aimed not only to inform but also to broaden discussions around reproductive health beyond the typical pro-life/pro-choice dichotomy.

The demonstration served as a call to action for students, encouraging them to support healthcare policies and engage with The Space, which aims to foster an inclusive dialogue on reproductive rights amidst challenges unique to a Catholic campus.
