Since the beginning of 2025, over two million Israelis have switched from the Israel Electric Corporation to private electricity suppliers as part of an ongoing market reform. This shift has benefited more than 500,244 private and business customers with electricity rates that are discounted by 7% to 20%, depending on the supplier. The trend of switching suppliers continued recently, with 23,286 requests submitted in September alone.
This reform is aimed at enhancing competition within the electricity market, driven by the addition of 1,000 megawatts of competition and a reduction in switching times from 14 to just 7 days. Reports indicate that this initiative can save households hundreds or even thousands of shekels annually, based on their specific usage patterns.
The market includes companies from both the energy and telecommunications sectors, like Cellcom and Bezeq, which purchase electricity from private generators and offer it to consumers at a discount. The Energy Minister, Eli Cohen, highlighted the significance of this reform, comparing it to the cellular revolution, indicating substantial savings for families and breaking the monopoly previously held by the Israel Electric Corporation.
As more customers decide to switch, there is a clear trend toward taking advantage of the competitive pricing available in the private market.
