Rowan-Virtua TBES and SOM Organize Gathering for Physician Scientists | Rowan Today

The Rowan-Virtua School of Osteopathic Medicine (SOM) and the Rowan-Virtua School of Translational Biomedical Engineering & Sciences (TBES) recently hosted the APSA Mid-Atlantic Regional Meeting. This event, held on Sept. 26, aimed to foster mentorship, collaboration, and advancement in biomedical research among medical students, physician-scientists, and researchers.

SOM Dean Richard Jermyn noted the significance of the meeting as it marked the first time an osteopathic medical school hosted such an event, showcasing the role of osteopathic education in training physician-scientists and providing opportunities for research engagement.

The program featured diverse presentations exploring research topics like immunology, biochemistry, drug development, and neuroscience, highlighting the link between laboratory findings and patient care. TBES Dean Dianne Langford emphasized that research starts at the bedside, as clinicians identify challenges that spur scientific investigation.

The event included poster sessions, oral presentations, and discussions led by experts. Attendees benefited from insights shared during a DO/PhD alumni panel and a keynote address by Eric Goldwaser, DO, PhD, a distinguished psychiatrist and SOM alumnus.

Overall, the meeting successfully created a platform for aspiring physician-scientists to share insights, build connections, and explore how research drives improvements in patient care.
