Companies respond after Greenville enacts lasting youth curfew

Youth Curfew Approved in Greenville, NC

Greenville, NC has implemented a permanent youth curfew aimed at improving safety in downtown areas and the Town Common, restricting individuals under 18 from these locations from 11 p.m. to 6 a.m. on Thursdays through Saturdays. The city council approved this measure in response to safety concerns, particularly following a recent shooting near Fifth Street that resulted in injuries.

Local business owners voiced their support for the curfew, citing concerns over safety affecting their operations. Omar Chahid of Omar’s Express Restaurant noted that recent events have significantly impacted his late-night business. Matthew Pizzo of The Holistic Company expressed hope that the curfew will bring positive changes.

Both owners emphasized the importance of strong law enforcement presence to ensure the curfew’s effectiveness, especially during busy times when the crowd size can complicate policing efforts. Pizzo suggested that all bars serve patrons aged 21 and older to simplify regulations regarding age restrictions.

To provide youth with safe recreational options, initiatives like the year-round Wave 365 program will continue, offering activities and academic support at the South Greenville Recreation Center.

Mayor Pro Tem Tonya Foreman reaffirmed the city’s commitment to addressing root causes of safety issues by providing productive community-led outlets.
