Planned Parenthood Expands Services for Menopause Care in Ohio
Planned Parenthood Southwest Ohio Region (PPSWO) is set to launch new services at its Dayton and Cincinnati locations aimed at providing relief for patients experiencing menopause and perimenopause symptoms. As part of this initiative, PPSWO aims to address gaps in healthcare where many women find their concerns about menopause dismissed by providers.
Menopause marks the end of menstrual periods, defined clinically as occurring 12 months after a person’s last period. Perimenopause, the transition leading up to menopause, can last several years, often accompanied by symptoms such as hot flashes and fatigue.
Despite the prevalence of these symptoms, many women report receiving unsatisfactory responses from healthcare providers, sometimes being told these issues are simply part of aging. A recent study from The Menopause Society highlighted that there are shortcomings in the training of family practitioners in providing menopause care.
Gwynne Perry, assistant medical director at PPSWO, emphasized that many patients feel belittled or unheard, causing them to stop seeking care altogether. In response, Nan Whaley, president and CEO of Planned Parenthood Southwest Ohio ACT, reassured patients of an environment where their concerns will be taken seriously, and evidence-based treatment plans will be developed collaboratively.
State Representative Ashley Bryant Bailey further highlighted the importance of addressing insurance inconsistencies that hinder access to menopause treatment. During a recent press conference in celebration of Menopause Awareness Month, she announced House Bill 767, designed to mandate insurance coverage for menopause-related treatments and promote comprehensive women’s healthcare throughout their lives.
With a focus on expanding access to care, PPSWO encourages women experiencing menopause or perimenopause to seek support. Interested parties can learn more or schedule appointments by visiting ppswo.info/menopause or calling (513) 287-6484.
