Rheinmetall ICEYE Space Solutions GmbH has achieved a significant milestone in its SPOCK 1 satellite program for the German Armed Forces, providing them direct access to dedicated Synthetic Aperture Radar (SAR) reconnaissance satellites. This allows the German forces to independently commission satellites to enhance their surveillance capabilities, particularly in monitoring NATO’s eastern flank and supporting operations in Lithuania.
Production of the SAR satellites has begun at the Neuss facility, marking the transition from planning to industrial implementation. The site integrates production, integration, testing, and quality assurance, with a team of specialists overseeing the entire manufacturing process. The goal is to produce and certify multiple satellites for launch each year.
Armin Papperger, CEO of Rheinmetall, emphasizes the rapid provision of dedicated SAR capabilities to the Armed Forces, showcasing Germany’s ability to scale innovative space technology industrially. Rafal Modrzewski, CEO of ICEYE, highlights the experience and track record of ICEYE in operating a large SAR constellation, which has facilitated this swift transition from contract to operational capability.
This initiative aims to bolster Europe’s technological and industrial foundation for space-based reconnaissance by combining advanced technology with local manufacturing capabilities.
