Cape Girardeau Sees Improved Safety Downtown After Increased Police Presence
CAPE GIRARDEAU, Mo. (Heartland News) – Business owners in downtown Cape Girardeau reported a marked improvement in safety over the past weekend, thanks to an increased police presence featuring more walking officers and patrol vehicles.
Travis Sieb, owner of Blue Diamond, noted a “night and day difference,” describing the weekend as the best in years. His staff expressed relief at the reduced crime and decreased incidents of unruly behavior, leading to a cleaner downtown environment.
Christopher Snider, owner of The Collective, echoed these sentiments, highlighting that no open-container violations were observed and attributing this success to the proactive presence of walking officers, which helped deter large gatherings and promote a safer atmosphere.
Despite the positive changes, Snider and other business owners plan to approach the city council regarding concerns about a recent fatal shooting on Main Street and to propose recommendations for enhancing downtown, such as improved lighting.
Sieb shared his enthusiasm for future investments in his business, inspired by the improved safety. He expressed hope that the increased police presence will continue long-term.
The Cape Girardeau Police Department has confirmed their intention to maintain heightened patrols in the downtown area moving forward.
