Harper College Opens Banana Lounge for Students

Harper College has introduced a new initiative to support student well-being: the Banana Lounge, officially opening on September 30. Located at the intersection of Buildings X, Y, and Z in the Avanté Center, the lounge offers students a free banana as a quick snack option.
A Space for Community and Support
The Banana Lounge will be open Monday through Thursday from 8:30 a.m. to 4 p.m. and Friday from 8:30 a.m. to 1 p.m., staffed by Math and Science Division student aides. The concept was inspired by a similar program at MIT, developed by Associate Professor Raeghan Graessle and Sarah Eftefield, to foster community and assist students facing food insecurity—a concern highlighted by a recent survey indicating that 34% of Harper students experience food insecurity.
A Focus on Nutrition and Connection
Graessle emphasized how hunger can impact students’ academic performance, stating, “I’ve had students who are hungry in class. It’s hard for them to concentrate.” With bananas being nutritious and easily accessible, the lounge aims to help students maintain focus and succeed in their studies.
The initiative also addresses social connectivity, with Graessle aiming to create a vibrant and welcoming atmosphere for students to relax and bond. “Now there’s a space on campus called the Banana Lounge, which just is kind of hilarious and fun,” she remarked.
Collaborative Efforts and Future Plans
The Lounge will serve over 100 bananas daily, with the potential to expand based on student needs. Funded by a Resource for Excellence Grant from the Harper College Educational Foundation, the program showcases Harper’s commitment to student welfare in a practical and engaging way. Collaboration with Sodexo ensures a steady supply of bananas.
“This is an in-your-face kind of tangible way Harper College is loving on its students. Just free bananas. If you’re hungry, grab one,” Graessle added, capturing the essence of this unique initiative.
