Toyota has introduced the second-generation Sora fuel cell bus in collaboration with Isuzu, boasting a range exceeding 300 km between refuels, despite having about 20% less hydrogen storage capacity than its predecessor. The new design integrates Isuzu’s battery-electric flat-floor platform with Toyota’s fuel cell system, now compactly positioned on the roof for easier maintenance.
This update allows for an approximately 100 km increase in range compared to the 2018 model. Improvements come from a more efficient fuel cell stack, which offers greater output and durability, alongside a larger battery.
Key specifications include:
- Length: 10,545 mm
- Capacity: 70 passengers
- Fuel cell stack power: 113 kW
- Motor output: Two at 110 kW each
- Hydrogen capacity: 471 litres across three 70 MPa tanks
Refuelling takes around 10 minutes, with a potential for future stations to cut this time in half. Safety features include an emergency stop system and a front blind-spot monitor, enhancing safety for drivers and pedestrians.
Toyota has supplied over 3,500 fuel cell systems since 2019 for various applications, indicating the widespread potential of its hydrogen technology beyond the Mirai sedan.
