Cybersecurity Hub Launched to Combat Cyber Threats: NMFTA

At the National Motor Freight Traffic Association’s cybersecurity conference in Long Beach, California, speakers emphasized the importance of cooperation in combating cybercrime. The discussions from the previous year resulted in the launch of the NMFTA’s Threat Report Portal, allowing companies impacted by cyberattacks to share their experiences anonymously.

Ben Wilkens, NMFTA’s cybersecurity director, mentioned the portal has seen a soft launch and is now fully operational, aiming for increased participation from the industry. The portal focuses on collecting Tactics, Techniques, and Procedures (TTP) as well as Indicators of Compromise (IOC) to build a collective defense against cyber threats.

Wilkens highlighted that reports are vetted to anonymize identifying information before sharing with the community. The vetting process can vary in duration but is always conducted by NMFTA staff. Early results show that the portal attracted over 100 registrants, including both large and small shippers. However, there’s a challenge in encouraging companies to share their information back into the portal, despite a regular stream of submissions.

Wilkens stressed the importance of understanding external threats and sharing knowledge on near-misses. This collaborative approach aims to strengthen defenses across the industry, recognizing that techniques successful against one entity might be applicable to others.
