Latino Seniors Celebrate Culture and Connection at Sacramento’s Hart Senior Center
Every Wednesday, around 90 Latino seniors gather at the Hart Senior Center in Sacramento for “Club Los Manitos,” a thriving community event that has been celebrating life and culture for nearly three decades.
Martha Hernández Salazar, a member, emphasizes the importance of the club, saying, “Don’t make me a doctor’s appointment cause Wednesday is my day here at Manitos.” What began with just 10 members has now grown significantly, showcasing the group’s importance as a source of connection and support, especially noted during the COVID pandemic.
Galo Tovar, another member, highlights the value of being among peers, stating, “It’s very important… to be with people where you totally identify with.” Members often embrace their cultural heritage, blending languages in joyful expressions, like Mauri Murillo mentioning her ease in switching between Spanish and English.
For many members, Club Los Manitos provides unique opportunities for socializing later in life, addressing the societal tendency to compartmentalize interactions by age. For some, the sense of community offers a spiritual connection, akin to what one might find in a place of worship.
This gathering not only preserves cultural traditions but builds meaningful relationships, proving essential in fostering a sense of belonging among Latino seniors in Sacramento.
