Fitzpatrick Breaks Jets’ 20-Game NFL Interception Drought – The Morning Call

Jets End Interception Drought Despite Loss to Bears

CHICAGO — Minkah Fitzpatrick’s interception marked a significant achievement for the New York Jets, ending a record-setting drought that had stretched over 20 games. In Sunday’s 23-12 defeat against the Chicago Bears, Fitzpatrick snagged an interception off backup quarterback Tyson Bagent in the second quarter. This was the Jets’ first interception since Ashtyn Davis’s two picks against Miami in the 2024 season finale.

Despite this milestone, the Jets faced setbacks with three additional interceptions nullified by penalties during their third straight loss. The defense allowed 34 first downs and 492 total yards to a Bears offense that was led by Bagent.

“I don’t think we did anything well that we wanted to do well,” said Fitzpatrick after the game.

Fitzpatrick, returning from a groin injury, recorded the 22nd interception of his career when he stepped in front of a pass aimed at tight end Colston Loveland. Discussing the interception, Fitzpatrick mentioned recognizing the receiver’s route: “The quarterback was looking my way, so I just, I drove it.”

Earlier in the game, T’Vondre Sweat had his interception dismissed due to a penalty on cornerback Azareye’h Thomas for illegal use of hands. Additionally, Brandon Stephens’ pick was canceled on a free play, and rookie D’Angelo Ponds had his potential first career interception wiped out by a holding penalty.

With 12 penalties for 76 yards, the Jets’ discipline was overshadowed by the Bears’ mere four penalties for 29 yards.

Fitzpatrick’s interception ended a staggering stretch of 643 pass attempts without a pick for the Jets. They had previously made history as the only NFL team not to record an interception in an entire season since detailed statistics began in 1933.

Before the season opener, coach Aaron Glenn, who had 41 career interceptions, expressed relief over the impending end of the drought. “I think it would be a relief to hear you guys stop talking about it, first and foremost,” he joked, while emphasizing the importance of takeaways in the league.

Despite the breakthrough moment, the Jets (1-3) will need to address their penalties and defensive struggles if they hope to turn their season around.
