The Philippine Space Agency (PhilSA) successfully concluded the first Analog Habitat Waypoint (ANAHAW) mission on September 26, 2026, with an all-Filipino crew. This mission, conducted in partnership with Batangas State University (BatStateU), aimed to simulate spaceflight conditions and assess performance under various challenges, including isolation and resource limitations.
The six-member crew, including Mission Commander Suguru Vaughn Hernandez and other specialists, conducted experiments such as human-rover collaboration and microbial sampling. Leading up to the mission, they completed a six-part training series on analog operations.
PhilSA Acting Director General Gay Jane Perez highlighted the mission’s significance for developing local expertise in space research. President Ferdinand R. Marcos Jr. expressed hope for future Filipino contributions to space exploration.
Additionally, Filipino analog astronauts have participated in international missions, gaining valuable experience. Looking ahead, PhilSA aims to expand analog missions to more universities, fostering a collaborative space science ecosystem in the Philippines.
