State Department Warns Travelers About Crime and Unrest in Cambodia

The U.S. State Department recently issued a Level 2 travel advisory for Cambodia, advising Americans to “Exercise Increased Caution” due to concerns about crime, civil unrest, and unexploded ordnance in certain regions. Some areas, particularly along the Cambodian-Thai border, are classified under the highest Level 4 warning of “Do Not Travel.”

Travelers are specifically cautioned in urban areas like Phnom Penh and various provinces that have been flagged for safety risks. The advisory provides direct recommendations, such as avoiding physical resistance during robbery attempts and maintaining awareness of surroundings. Travelers should also refrain from accepting drinks from strangers to mitigate risks related to drink-spiking incidents.

Moreover, Cambodia upholds strict drug laws with severe penalties for violations. The advisory underscores the importance of purchasing travel insurance and being prepared for emergencies, including potential evacuation.

For Americans who choose to proceed with travel to Cambodia, vigilance and practical safety measures are strongly encouraged.
