WVU Football Offense Shines Despite Loss to Iowa State
West Virginia University’s football team put forth an impressive offensive effort, racking up 518 yards and scoring 42 points in a tough matchup against Iowa State. However, this wasn’t enough to secure a victory, as the defense faltered once again.
Key Highlights from the Game
- The Mountaineers’ offense showed significant improvement compared to last season, thanks in part to new additions and a revamped offensive line under Coach Rick Trickett.
- Leading rusher Cam Cook put on a stellar performance with 142 yards on 20 carries, showcasing the effectiveness of the ground game which totaled 291 rushing yards.
- Quarterback Michael Hawkins Jr. threw for 227 yards, completing 11 of 23 passes and contributing two touchdowns. His performance marks progress from previous outings, despite a turnover from a fumble.
- D.J. Epps shone in the receiving department with 114 yards on four catches, marking his second 100-yard receiving game of the season. Transfer Prince Strachan also made an impact, coming off an injury to add three catches for 41 yards.
Areas for Improvement
Despite the offensive fireworks, the Mountaineers must address glaring defensive issues. Zac Alley, the defensive coordinator, faced criticism for the team’s inconsistency, particularly given they allowed 42 points—the highest any team has scored against Iowa State this season.
Cook acknowledged the team’s jitters during their first real away game, emphasizing the need for focus and discipline, especially with seven penalties for 60 yards in the first half.
Looking Ahead
As the Mountaineers dive deeper into Big 12 play, the potential is there for a competitive season, contingent on finding a solution to the defensive struggles. With newfound offensive capabilities, the team remains optimistic about future matchups, provided the defense can step up to complement their strong offensive performance.
