LOUDONVILLE, NY (WRGB) — It’s Family Weekend at Siena University! The community came together for the Blessing of the Animals, including a meet-and-greet with their new baby mascot.
In homage to St. Francis, who passed 800 years ago, the celebration focused on recognizing the divine in all creatures.
Fr. Mark G. Reamer, O.F.M., Vice President for Mission, reflected on St. Francis’ love for animals, saying, “Francis would talk to the crickets, ants, and bees, seeing them as gifts praising God.”
Among those receiving blessings was Baloo, Siena’s mascot and director of happiness, along with his successor, Baby Baloo.
Charles Rice, Baloo’s owner and handler, stated, “Baloo has helped with basketball and admissions events over the past six years. As he ages, we want to ensure he lives a fulfilling life.”
Before retiring, Baloo will train Baby Baloo alongside Rice. Guests could interact with the nine-week-old Saint Bernard post-blessing, which won’t happen during training.
Rice explained, “We’ll implement ‘no talk, no touch, no eye contact’ strategies to ease anxiety for both pets and owners during transitions.”
Training will continue for several months, during which Baby Baloo will make appearances at various events on campus.
