Shipley’s Garment Spa, a staple of downtown Sioux Falls since 1902, will close its doors for the final time on October 22, 2026. Owners Gerry and Susie Wingler announced the closure following years of operational challenges, including health issues, economic pressures, industry changes, and a critical employee shortage.
The family-owned business, which has served the community for over a century, began its journey when telephone calls were limited to just a few numbers, with Shipley’s being one of them. Notably, the company started delivering laundry via horse and buggy in 1927.
The Winglers expressed their heartfelt gratitude to the customers who have supported the business over the years, emphasizing the importance of community and connection that Shipley’s has fostered. While acceptance of items for cleaning will end by 9 a.m. on October 22, the office will remain open for pickups and inquiries until November 6.
As Shipley’s prepares to close, the owners reflect on the rich history and lasting relationships built throughout the years, marking the end of an era in Sioux Falls.
