Control Resonant composer describes his responsibility to ‘narrate the story,’ while occasionally presenting it ‘from a new perspective, as contrasting with the visual elements can be quite tantalizing.’

Petri Alanko, the composer for Control Resonant, describes video game music as an “emotional vessel,” emphasizing its role in storytelling. He believes that it’s his duty to present the game’s narrative beautifully, allowing the music to exist independently from the game itself, which he sees as essential to its integrity.

In discussions with TechRadar, Alanko shared that, much like in a band, his role is to elevate the elements of the story. He views his work as a homage to the narrative, striving to make it more approachable and resonant. However, he underscores the importance of the music’s standalone quality, noting that it should never feel like mere improvisation.

While the music serves to enhance the story, Alanko sometimes offers a contrasting perspective that adds complexity to the game’s events. He likens this element to human nature, acknowledging that life’s unpredictability can deepen emotional experiences.

Alanko affirms that his enjoyment of the creative process is crucial, believing that if he is moved, others will likely feel the same. His approach embodies a blend of artistry and respect for the audience and the original narrative creators.

You can experience Control Resonant on PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X/S, and PC.
