Jagex Announces “RuneScape 4” at RuneFest
Overview
During the annual RuneFest convention, developer Jagex has unveiled a new MMO named “RuneScape 4,” marking a follow-up to the popular RuneScape series.
Teaser Trailer Insights
The announcement included a brief teaser trailer that exhibited the game’s art style, which melds aesthetics from Jagex’s recent Dragonwilds survival game, along with elements reminiscent of both RuneScape 3 and Old School RuneScape. The trailer showcases a medieval town under floating islands, an adventurer battling a three-headed dragon, and a wizard greeting a new player.
Development Background
“RuneScape 4” reportedly evolved from a planned expansion for Dragonwilds. Playtesters expressed a desire for a more traditional MMO experience, prompting Jagex to pivot the project. The game is being developed on Unreal Engine, though it’s unclear whether it will utilize version 5 or the upcoming version 6. The initial target release for the Dragonwilds expansion was set for 2027, leading to speculation that the timeline may be pushed back due to the scale-up to a full game.
RuneScape’s Numbering System
Jagex’s release history explains the “4” in RuneScape 4:
- RuneScape (2001): The original game.
- RuneScape 2 (2004): Featured full 3D rendering, with Old School based on its 2007 version.
- RuneScape 3 (2013): An extensive overhaul of art and systems, this is currently the main version.
Future Considerations
While Old School RuneScape continues to thrive as Jagex’s most successful game, questions remain about whether RuneScape 4 will maintain character progression from RuneScape 3 or transition to a new model.
