SpaceX sent Google AI chips into orbit aboard Planet Labs satellites.

On July 21, 2026, SpaceX launched a Falcon 9 rocket from Cape Canaveral, Florida, successfully carrying Northrop Grumman’s Mission Robotic Vehicle (MRV) and Mission Extension Pods (MEPs). This mission represents a significant step towards integrating artificial intelligence infrastructure in space.

Alphabet, the parent company of Google, took a significant leap by sending its AI chips into orbit during this mission. The launch, part of the uncrewed Transporter-18 mission, marks the first in-orbit test for Project Suncatcher, Google’s initiative aimed at creating solar-powered AI computing infrastructure in space.

The project is positioned to explore the potential of satellites in low Earth orbit to generate solar power efficiently, with the goal of utilizing AI workloads in a scalable manner. Alphabet has invested significantly in SpaceX, which is valued at over $82 billion.

Challenges remain, including the need for robust cooling systems and durable chips that can withstand space conditions. However, both SpaceX and Alphabet are optimistic about the future of space-based data centers, foreseeing them as a viable alternative to ground-based facilities.
