The alleged driver involved in a serious incident with a crowd of Newcastle Knights supporters has been charged. Indika Bambrick Samarasinghe, 18, faces multiple charges ranging from dangerous driving to negligent driving causing grievous bodily harm. He was arrested after a car he allegedly drove crashed into a gathering at a roundabout in Wallsend, Newcastle, injuring ten people, including two young girls and a 67-year-old man.
Emergency services responded quickly, and victims were taken to John Hunter Hospital. As the Knights team bus was scheduled to pass through the area, the crowd was there to send off the team for their grand final appearance, which turned into a distressing event instead.
Samarasinghe’s provisional license has been suspended, and he is scheduled to appear in court. Following the incident, the Police Minister referred to the situation as an “absolute tragedy.” The Knights organization expressed their thoughts and concerns for those affected by the incident. Support from the community continues as injured individuals provide updates on their conditions from the hospital.
