This Vehicle Ascended Mount Washington | News

The River Hawk Racing team from UMass Lowell made history by becoming the first collegiate Formula SAE team to drive their race car up Mount Washington, New Hampshire, on September 12. The achievement came after an initial setback during a racing event in August, where a critical component failed. Undeterred, they returned to the mountain in September to successfully complete the climb.

Led by President Ken Hawkey and driver Garrett Marquis, the team tackled challenges like navigating traffic and managing their car’s performance on the steep incline. Reaching the summit was a significant milestone, showcasing both their ingenuity on a limited budget and their potential to future sponsors.

Now, the students are focused on designing a new car for the 2027 Formula SAE competition in Michigan.
