Exploring the Intersection of Sports Science and Data Analytics

Dr. Brian Biagioli Pioneers Doctor of Sport Science Program

When Dr. Brian Biagioli explored the burgeoning field of sports science, he uncovered a significant gap: a lack of dedicated doctoral programs tailored to developing specialists in athlete performance and data analytics.

Responding to a Need

Biagioli, an assistant professor at the University of Miami’s School of Education and Human Development, noted, “There were a couple of programs in exercise physiology or kinesiology, but none focused on human performance or offered comprehensive training in data analytics specific to sports.”

In response, he developed a unique Doctor of Sport Science in Sport Science and Data Analytics. This program is designed to equip professionals with the skills needed to lead sport science initiatives in various settings, including athletic departments and professional organizations.

Curriculum Development

Creating this program involved extensive research. Biagioli aligned the curriculum with industry demands by studying national board exam specifications and conducting role-delineation studies with practitioners from prominent sports leagues. This method ensured that the program’s courses directly correlate with the everyday responsibilities sport science professionals face.

The rigorous curriculum consists of 20 courses. Instead of a traditional dissertation, students engage in a sport science project that produces a working key performance indicator using real athlete data, alongside programming skills in R and Python.

Enthusiastic Response

Even without initial marketing, the demand for the program was immediate, with Biagioli receiving over 70 inquiries from coaches worldwide during the first week. Although he planned for a 15-student cohort, enrollment quickly grew, with 40 students, many already employed in sports roles, joining a hybrid track.

Innovative Learning Models

To accommodate working professionals, hybrid students attend classes on campus just once or twice a year, engaging in hands-on experiences such as proficiency demonstrations with sport science instruments. Each student receives a tailored learning path based on their previous academic work, promoting a focused progression in their education.

Real-World Application

International student Markus Mallenschitz, who chose the on-campus option, spoke to the program’s strengths: “Learning from experts and applying that knowledge sets this program apart. It’s a significant reason I decided to stay for my doctoral studies.”

The program benefits from collaborations with Miami Athletics, providing students with real-world experience and access to the new Integrated Neuroscience and Human Performance Lab housed in the Hecht Athletic facility.

A Vision for the Future

Biagioli envisions a future where students not only gain academic knowledge but also have a direct impact on the sports industry. He asks students to imagine being in a classroom with peers working for leading teams like the Chicago Bulls or Boston Red Sox. With this innovative program, the University of Miami is at the forefront of teaching professional teams the intricacies of sports science.
