Hattiesburg firefighters successfully rescued a dog from a burning home on Ashford Circle in September. The rescue involved the use of specialized oxygen masks for animals, as reported by Fire Department Chief Chris Carr.
Upon arriving, firefighters found the house engulfed in flames. During a walk-around inspection, they heard what they initially described as an eerie screech, which led them to discover the trapped dog near a window. After breaking the window, they swiftly entered the home to retrieve the unresponsive dog.
Once outside, the firefighters applied the animal oxygen mask, which had been donated by the Animal Medical Center of Hattiesburg. Within minutes, the dog began to show signs of life: its eyes fluttered, its tongue moved, and soon after, it was back on its feet.
The fire department has now equipped all their emergency vehicles with both human and pet oxygen masks thanks to this donation. They also advise pet owners to keep animals in a single room with the door closed when left alone, offering extra time for rescue in case of emergencies. Thankfully, no one else was inside the home during the fire, and according to recent updates, the dog is doing well.
