Reduced Walnut Harvest Could Bring Positive Outcomes | John Lindt | Business

The recent purchase by California producers coincides with a significant harvest period, as the California Walnut Commission reports that the state is set to have the second-largest walnut crop in history. Despite previous years marked by low prices (below $1 per pound), production costs for approximately 3,700 Central Valley growers continue to rise.

Fresh Plaza notes a trend where walnut acreage has decreased from over 400,000 to around 371,000 due to recent developments, along with a lower nut set anticipated to lead to smaller crop yields, potentially encouraging better price outcomes. The industry has successfully marketed high-quality crops for export, which adds a positive note.

However, growers are still grappling with increased fuel prices and rising interest rates, which impact their overall operations.

On a broader scale, Kern County’s 2025 crop report shows a gross value of over $8.93 billion, reflecting a 12% increase from 2024. This reinforces the importance of agriculture in the region, with significant contributions from the fruit and nut sector, as well as livestock. Particular crops, like almonds and grapes, have seen increases in value thanks to improved production and pricing per ton. In contrast, citrus valuations have taken a hit due to lower prices. Overall, Kern County’s valuation surpasses previous years, positioning it competitively against neighboring counties like Fresno and Tulare for top rankings in crop value for 2025.
