Costa Mesa is moving forward with plans to award a new contract for animal services after ending its agreement with Priceless Pet Rescue. The city’s new proposed terms, which closely resemble a proposal from the temporary provider, Westminster Adoption Group and Services (WAGS), have raised concerns, as they differ significantly from the prior agreement.
In June, officials announced the termination due to Priceless Pets’ failure to meet contractual obligations, including housing animals and providing on-call staffing. Subsequently, a temporary arrangement with WAGS was established at a higher annual cost, set to expire on December 31.
The recent request for proposals (RFP), which closed on Wednesday, lacks several key requirements that were part of the previous contract. Notably, the demand for a shelter within city limits and on-site 24/7 staffing has been removed. The new RFP calls for only a local office and limited veterinary services.
Members of the Costa Mesa Animal Services Committee expressed concerns about not being consulted in the RFP process. The committee chair, Cara Stewart, indicated a desire for a more collaborative approach moving forward. An online petition advocating for a city-run animal shelter has gained traction, garnering over 270 signatures.
Former committee member Becca Walls emphasizes the importance of community oversight in animal services agreements. Meanwhile, Priceless Pets’ owner, who continues to run an adoption center, reflects on the changes and expresses hope for the city’s future decisions.
