Youngstown Business Owners Rally for a Positive Image
In a recent roundtable discussion, downtown Youngstown business owners voiced their frustrations regarding negative perceptions of their city, particularly on social media. Mark Canzonetta, owner of Casa di Canzonetta, expressed discontent with claims that downtown is unsafe, stating, “That’s all a bunch of bulls***.”
Joey Mamounis, a representative for Prima Cucina and Youngstown Coffee Company, echoed these sentiments, saying, “People have been working very, very hard to give you the downtown experience that you get in cities like Cleveland and Pittsburgh.” He emphasized the quality of businesses in downtown Youngstown and the efforts made over the past two decades to improve the area.
Daniel Fahd, owner of The Social, highlighted the diverse offerings downtown, from lunch spots to late-night live music venues. “Each one of us has a different venue, different concept,” he said.
The business owners are united in their goal to reclaim their city’s narrative, insisting on a collaborative approach to enhance downtown’s reputation. John Rudy, owner of Varsity Club, affirmed their camaraderie, stating that the owners work together for a better downtown experience.
Canzonetta shared the challenges they have faced, including the aftermath of the Realty building explosion, prolonged roadwork, and pandemic hurdles. These issues, compounded by concerns over disturbances at bus stops and recent street fights, have made it even more difficult for local businesses. He noted making significant personal sacrifices to keep his business afloat, underscoring their commitment to the community.
“There have been issues with congregating crowds,” Anne Massullo, owner of Avalon Downtown Pizzeria, mentioned, suggesting increased police presence and better lighting in parking areas as potential solutions. While they appreciate the efforts of the Youngstown police, the business owners are calling for more consistent patrols to ensure safety.
Although Youngstown Mayor Derrick McDowell could not attend the meeting, his encouragement and support for open communication with the business community have been positively received.
Conclusion
The resilience and determination of Youngstown’s business owners shine through as they work together to change the narrative surrounding their city.
