Sen. Gene Yaw urges PJM to enhance the state’s energy resources.

Pennsylvania Senator Urges PJM Interconnection to Address Energy Challenges

In a recent letter to the PJM Interconnection Board of Managers, state Sen. Gene Yaw, R-Loyalsock Township, emphasized the urgent need for improvements in governance and a renewed focus on expanding energy generation and transmission capabilities. As chair of the Senate Environmental Resources and Energy Committee, Yaw highlighted the critical need for reliable and affordable power.

Key Points:

  • Demand for Growth: Yaw stated, “Pennsylvania is ready, willing and able to support the generation growth necessary to power our economic future,” stressing the importance of clearing the generation queue and enhancing infrastructure.

  • Market Challenges: He noted that the rapid growth of data centers—many lacking their own power supply—has coincided with shrinking reserve margins, creating significant challenges for the PJM system.

  • Litigation Concerns: Yaw expressed concern over Gov. Josh Shapiro’s stance on litigation regarding the Federal Power Act Section 205. He cautioned that pursuing legal battles could detract from the more pressing need to increase generation capacity.

  • Capacity Context: More than 200 gigawatts of generation capacity currently await action in the PJM queue, with Pennsylvania representing over 20% of that total.

  • Call for Reforms: Yaw urged PJM to implement governance reforms that have been reached through negotiation, suggesting that prolonged litigation will not solve the issues at hand.

As Pennsylvania continues to play a significant role in energy supply for the PJM region, these discussions underscore the importance of regulatory clarity and proactive measures to meet future energy demands.
