BMW launches sixth-generation battery production at its new facility in Bavaria.

The BMW Group has inaugurated its Plant Irlbach-Strasskirchen in Bavaria, commencing series production of sixth-generation high-voltage batteries for the new BMW i3. Construction started 2.5 years ago, and production is now running on a two-shift schedule. The rapid ramp-up in production is attributed to the demand for new models in the “Neue Klasse.”

Raymond Wittmann, from BMW’s board of management, emphasized the plant’s significance for technology competitiveness and electromobility in Germany. The facility integrates advanced production methods, including AI and robotics, to ensure quality and efficiency.

The Gen6 batteries will be used across all BMW vehicle segments, with over 3,500 data points monitored in real-time during production. The plant operates sustainably with no fossil fuels used for standard operations, relying on renewable energy sources. The new BMW i3 features a battery capacity of 108.7 kWh, achieving a range of up to 906 km, and supports fast charging at 400 kW.

The innovative design and manufacturing process represent a step forward in resource efficiency and technological advancement in electric mobility.
