Caterpillar Inc. is set to invest around $1 billion to expand its manufacturing operations in Sanford, Lee County, creating additional jobs and increasing production capabilities. The company, one of the area’s largest employers, already has about 2,000 workers and has hired 600 more this year. The planned facility will focus on producing compact track loaders and telehandlers.
North Carolina Commerce Secretary Lee Lilley emphasized the significance of this investment, stating it reflects the state’s manufacturing strength. Caterpillar is looking to acquire a 500-acre site for the expansion. This move is expected to be one of the largest corporate investments in Lee County’s history.
Caterpillar’s investment aims to enhance production efficiency and safety, utilizing advanced manufacturing technologies and integrated systems. The incentives for this project include $46 million in tax rebates from the Lee County Board of Commissioners and a $39.5 million incentive plan approved by the Sanford City Council.
To qualify for the economic incentives, Caterpillar must invest the full $1 billion and maintain at least 1,950 full-time jobs with an average annual wage of around $65,500. There has been some criticism regarding the use of substantial tax breaks for big corporations despite discussions about property tax limitations affecting local services. Additionally, the state’s Industrial Development Fund has allocated $2.6 million to support this project.
