Dark Fracture: A Journey into Madness
An Exclusive Interview with Jakub Śliwiński of Twisted II Studio
Welcome to Insider Gaming’s 28 Games Later: A Horror Showcase. Among the standout titles was Dark Fracture, a psychological horror game developed by Twisted II Studio. Here, we unravel our exclusive interview with the developer to dive deeper into the chilling world of Dark Fracture.
What is Dark Fracture?
In Dark Fracture, players embody Edward, a night-shift worker at a body farm in the late 1990s. The game invites you to navigate the unsettling realms where reality and nightmares intertwine. As you explore Edward’s distorted psyche, you delve into a world simultaneously familiar and alien.
Development Journey
Q: How long has the game been in development?
The full game has been in development for about five years. After releasing the Prologue, we dedicated significant time to enhance the overall experience. Although the Prologue remains a separate entity, its narrative and mechanics laid the groundwork for the full game’ s depth.
Inspirations Behind Dark Fracture
Q: Can you talk about the game’s inspiration?
Our starting point was the body farm itself—a disturbingly real setting that offers a grounded backdrop from which we explore the strange. Influences include H.R. Giger and Zdzisław Beksiński on the artistic front, while Lovecraft inspired the deeper existential dread. Key games like Silent Hill, Visage, and Scorn also shaped our vision.
Overcoming Development Challenges
Q: During the game’s development, what obstacles did you face?
We faced numerous hurdles, many stemming from decisions we made early in development. Our ambition led us to include more features, which created unnecessary complexity. Working with a small team meant that every increase in scope dramatically affected our timeline. Ultimately, we learned to prioritize quality over quantity.
The “Eureka” Moment
Q: Was there a “eureka” moment during development?
Surprisingly, no singular “aha” moment occurred. Instead, it came together gradually through countless smaller decisions. The harmony of sound, story, and gameplay eventually turned what once felt like disparate concepts into a cohesive experience.
Features to Look Forward To
Q: What features are you most proud of?
The body farm stands out as a major achievement. Its unsettling atmosphere, complete with fluorescent lighting and decomposing bodies, creates a backdrop that’s both relatable and nightmarish. In contrast, the Underworld is an entirely alien environment, driving mystery as players uncover the facility’s dark secrets.
Pitching Dark Fracture
Q: How would you pitch Dark Fracture to potential players?
Dark Fracture is a first-person psychological-cosmic horror game centered around Edward, a routine worker in a body farm. Unearth what lurks beyond the familiar as reality blurs, leading to unsettling discoveries. It’s designed for those who revel in slow-building dread and cryptic narratives.
