Midtown Costco to Shut Down and Transition into a Business Center

The Costco in Midtown Kansas City, operational for over 25 years, is set to close on Thursday evening. The site will undergo significant renovations and rebrand as a Costco Business Center, scheduled to reopen in spring 2027. This transition means the elimination of everyday retail items such as clothing, liquor, and optical services, raising concerns among locals about the potential for increased food deserts in the area.

Customers expressed sadness over the closure, particularly emphasizing the importance of the location for the community. Shopper John Williams highlighted the store’s role in the inner city, noting its popularity and the loss of convenient access to essential items. Small business owner Jalantaria Holmes mentioned her reliance on the store for her cinnamon roll business, expressing her disappointment but also understanding about the relocation.

Costco plans to keep the pharmacy open during the transformation, while a new location opens in Lee’s Summit to accommodate shoppers looking for standard warehouse items.
