Princeton University is currently assessing the future of the Center on Science and Technology (CST) as part of broader budget cuts. The CST, which includes the StudioLab—a creative technology space—may see parts of its operations transferred to other campus units.
On a recent Wednesday, StudioLab staff received an email from manager Brendan Byrne, indicating that future budget cuts would affect the CST. He assured them that employment at StudioLab is secure until the end of the fiscal year on June 30, 2027, and that their hours and services will not be reduced in the interim.
Dean of the College Michael Gordin explained that while no decisions have been finalized, the CST’s mission and work will be reviewed over the coming months, focusing on how to maintain essential programs, potentially through partnerships with other campus units. This year, the CST is offering 17 courses that fulfill various distribution requirements across multiple departments.
Gordin emphasized that all current CST programs, including STEM education, will proceed as planned. Additionally, CST associate director Penelope Georges and professor Mary Caswell Stoddard highlighted the center’s unique contributions to interdisciplinary education and STEM literacy over its 36-year history.
Overall, while budget cuts are looming, efforts are being made to retain critical services and opportunities provided by the CST and StudioLab.
