The Joys of Driving in New Places: A Journey to The Bridge
Traveling offers a unique adventure, especially when experiencing the thrill of driving in unfamiliar territory. It can be daunting or exhilarating—depending on your comfort level with city chaos. For me, navigating the streets of Manhattan, where I’ve only driven a couple of times, was a different kind of adventure. Stepping out of my hotel to find a sleek Mercedes-AMG GT63 Pro waiting felt akin to gearing up for a flight in an F-35.
Driving in Manhattan resembles a video game, not a racing simulator, but rather a zombie or dungeon-escape scenario—full of obstacles like pedestrians, dogs, and delivery vehicles. After surviving the city’s hustle, I aimed for the scenic, winding roads of Long Island.
While this story encompasses my driving experience, its focus is on The Bridge golf club and its tribute to the former Bridgehampton race circuit. Built in 1957, this venue was an early haven for road racing until it closed due to rising property values and diminishing support for motorsports in the affluent community. The original owner, Robert Rubin, transitioned the track into a private golf club, regretting the decision as racing clubs regain popularity.
Despite its exclusive nature, The Bridge is a beloved venue, where car enthusiasts are allowed one day a year to showcase their vehicles. Curated by Rubin and his partners, the car show emphasizes a relaxed atmosphere, filled not only with cars but quirky installations, creating a whimsical experience that diverges from traditional auto shows.
Instead of precise categories and judging, guests wander through rows of fascinating vehicles, discovering surprises like a collection of Testarossas or a striking white car display. The event even features a drive-in movie showcasing iconic car chases.
All in all, while I only put a few miles on my step counter—thanks to a delightful encounter with Martha Stewart—attending The Bridge was a charming way to enjoy car culture. For those unable to secure invitations, the surrounding events offer excellent opportunities for car spotting, ensuring the Hamptons are always a great getaway for auto enthusiasts.
