EU-Backed Project for Circularity in Automotive Recycling
A new EU-supported initiative in Denmark, with a budget of DKK 55 million, aims to repurpose materials and components from end-of-life vehicles between 2026 and 2028. This project seeks to build sustainable value chains, create business opportunities, and support jobs linked to vehicle dismantling and resource recovery.
Goals of the Project
The main focus is on fostering cooperation between vehicle recyclers and small to medium enterprises (SMEs) to develop innovative business models. By turning waste into valuable resources, the initiative supports environmental goals and economic growth.
Key Partners:
- Projekter imidt: Project lead
- WEUPCYCL: A platform targeting circular economy applications
- Salling Autogenbrug: A vehicle recyclery providing practical testing for greener dismantling methods
Challenges and Opportunities
Despite the potential value locked in end-of-life vehicles, valuable resources are often lost due to an immature market and insufficient collaboration between recyclers and companies. The project aims to address these issues through:
- Innovation and Product Development: Creating business models that encourage resource separation and reuse.
- New Partnerships: Connecting industries to explore potential applications for recovered materials.
Economic and Social Impact
Aside from environmental benefits, the project focuses on creating job opportunities for unskilled workers. More comprehensive dismantling processes will necessitate a larger workforce for sorting and preparing materials.
Support for Businesses
Participating firms will receive specialized advice and development programs to help transition to circular solutions and build partnerships. This initiative leverages Denmark’s strengths in recycling and innovation to generate solutions that benefit both the environment and business competitiveness.
Participation Invitation
The project is currently inviting companies interested in developing applications for reused materials, as well as vehicle recyclers aiming to enhance their operations.
