The University of Nevada has introduced a new Bachelor of Animal Science degree, addressing the absence of such programs in the state. With Nevada being a significant cattle-producing state, this degree aims to equip students with knowledge in areas such as breeding, genetics, physiology, nutrition, and meat production, while also focusing on sustainability in animal agriculture.
Dr. Amilton de Mello from the College of Agriculture, Biotechnology & Natural Resources emphasizes the program’s aim to tackle contemporary challenges in livestock and meat production. He notes that students will engage in both research and practical experiences to prepare for careers in ranching, veterinary medicine, and related fields.
Dr. Mike Teglas, chair of the Agriculture, Veterinary and Rangeland Sciences Department, highlights the demand for this degree in Nevada and surrounding areas. The program promises personalized mentoring and hands-on opportunities to ensure students are well-equipped for their future careers in animal-related industries. Prior to this, the university only offered classes and specializations in animal science rather than a dedicated degree program.
