White House selects new general to lead US Space Command

The White House has nominated Lt. Gen. David N. Miller Jr. to lead the U.S. Space Command as its next general. Currently, he serves as the deputy chief of Space Operations, Strategy, Plans, Programs, and Requirements. If confirmed, Miller will succeed Gen. Stephen Whiting, who is set to step down later this year.

Chief of Space Operations Gen. Douglas Schiess praised Miller as “an exceptional guardian” and a strong candidate for the role. Miller’s previous positions include commander of Space Operations Command at Peterson Space Force Base in Colorado and various leadership roles at different bases within the Air Force.

The nomination reflects the increasing importance of space capabilities in U.S. defense strategy, especially as the Secretary of the Air Force announced new on-orbit space control weapons. These advancements are seen as crucial for deterrence against potential threats.

Miller would be the fourth commander of U.S. Space Command since its reestablishment in 2019. A confirmation hearing from the Senate Armed Services Committee has yet to be scheduled.
