Banijay Greenlights Adaptation of “Uma Mulher No Escuro” for Globoplay

Media and entertainment group Banijay Entertainment has announced its adaptation of Raphael Montes’s novel “Uma Mulher No Escuro” (“A Woman in the Dark”) for Globoplay. This project will be produced by Banijay’s Brazilian scripted label, A Fábrica, in collaboration with Montes’s development studio, Casa Montes.

The adaptation’s launch is expected to be officially announced during the Spotlight event, “Inside Banijay’s Fiction Strategy: the Motor of Global IPs,” scheduled for September 30 at Madrid’s Iberseries & Platino Industria.

Raphael Montes is recognized as one of Brazil’s leading authors and a prolific screenwriter. His works, including Netflix’s “Good Morning, Verônica” and the Globoplay hit “Perfect Days,” have garnered both audience acclaim and critical success. Montes has become a significant force in creating intellectual property in South America.

He has also recently worked with A Fábrica on Netflix’s “A Estranha na Cama,” achieving over a million book sales worldwide and translations in more than 25 countries.

“Uma Mulher no Escuro” has received the prestigious Jabuti Literary Prize for Best Entertainment Novel, telling the story of Victoria Bravo, who witnesses the brutal murder of her family as a child. Two decades later, as she tries to rebuild her life, she becomes convinced that the murderer has returned, leading her into a complex mystery.

Simone Oliveira, Director of Development & New Business at A Fábrica, emphasized the importance of nurturing creative relationships and collaborating with Montes, stating that their partnership aims to blend prestigious literary IP with premium storytelling for Globoplay’s next hit.

A Fábrica has seen significant growth driven by the success of “Desperate Lies” (“Pedaço de Mim”) on Netflix, and is expanding its diverse portfolio of films and series, featuring titles like the psychological thriller “A Estranha na Cama,” contemporary comedy “Enfim Sós,” and drama “Mãe Imperfeita.”

Since its inception in 2016, A Fábrica has developed over 30 projects, encompassing more than 800 episodes across various genres. As part of Banijay Entertainment, one of Europe’s leading scripted studios, A Fábrica contributes to the development of over 140 scripted titles and produces more than 1,800 hours of content annually, including acclaimed series like “Peaky Blinders” and “Call the Midwife.”
