LG Chem and Volkswagen have formed a partnership to develop lightweight, recycled, and high-performance materials for sustainable vehicle production. By signing a memorandum of understanding (MOU), they aim to leverage LG Chem’s expertise in synthetic resins and engineering plastics alongside Volkswagen’s global manufacturing capabilities.
The collaboration will focus on materials such as acrylonitrile butadiene styrene (ABS) and recycled options, targeting better vehicle lightweighting without sacrificing performance. LG Chem’s existing products are already integral to various automotive components, and this partnership could broaden the usage of recycled materials in Volkswagen’s vehicle lineup.
As Volkswagen works on its “Future Plan 2030,” the focus is on improving efficiency amid competitive market conditions. Recent visits by Volkswagen executives to LG Chem facilities indicate a commitment to enhance cooperation in research and development.
For LG Chem, the agreement bolsters its position in the automotive materials sector, with a current production capacity of 2.35 million tonnes of ABS annually. The MOU is expected to create further demand for specialty plastics, particularly if successful material qualifications lead to large-scale automotive applications, potentially supporting higher ABS prices and related feedstock demand.
