Overview Energy Secures OECIF Contract from the Department of War to Create Homing Beacon for Space-Based Solar Power

Overview Energy Secures U.S. Military Contract for Space Solar Energy System

ASHBURN, Va., Sept. 30, 2026 /PRNewswire/ – The Operational Energy Capability Improvement Fund (OECIF), a Department of War initiative, has awarded Overview Energy a contract to develop a homing beacon for its innovative space solar energy system. This contract is aimed at enhancing operational energy technologies that support military operations.

Overview Energy’s pioneering satellites aim to collect solar energy in orbit and transmit it to ground infrastructure, utilizing near-infrared light for safe power delivery. The newly designed homing beacon will enable satellites to accurately locate and beam power to solar receiver sites on the ground, ensuring secure energy transfer and preventing signal spoofing.

The OECIF program enables Overview to collaborate closely with military personnel from the design phase through to field testing, ensuring that the beacon hardware meets real-world operational needs. Christopher DePuma, Combat Power Portfolio Lead at OECIF, noted the significance of this technology in providing reliable power to remote military locations, alleviating dependence on vulnerable fuel convoys.

Darko Filipi, Co-CEO of Overview Energy, emphasized the importance of precise power delivery for warfighters, stating that user feedback is essential in shaping operational hardware. The beacon will integrate into Overview’s first satellite for a 2028 space demonstration and will be foundational for a future GEO satellite constellation.
